Applying for Assistance with Evaluation Activities

Before applying for assistance with evaluation activities, the organization should have a clearly focused evaluation plan. This will make the student’s work more effective. The resources below are intended to help organizations write a successful, well-planned proposal.

Effective Evaluation Proposals Will Include These Ten Elements:

  1. The purpose of the evaluation. Frequently evaluations are done to improve program performance, communicate program effectiveness to stakeholders, or replicate the program. Please note that the Kris Nelson Neighborhood Research Program  does not support funder-mandated evaluation projects.
  2. Narrowly-defined, achievable, and prioritized program goals. Clearly articulated program goals are an important starting point for conducting evaluation activities.
  3. Type of evaluation. Explain whether this will be an outcome, impact, process, or other type of evaluation.
  4. Realistic timeframe. The project can be completed within 195 hours during the school year or 260 hours during the summer.
  5. Clear definition of the student’s role in the evaluation. Students may conduct a survey, develop evaluation processes, review best practices, conduct the evaluation, etc.
  6. Explanation of how the data was/will be collected. Consider the availability of contact information for survey or focus group participants and/or whether qualitative data is specific enough and collected at regular intervals.
  7. Description of the audience for the evaluation. Include the types of information stakeholders require and find credible.
  8. An evaluation budget. Include other sources of grant funding and how you will pay for supporting costs such as incentives for focus group or survey participants, postage, phone, translators, or interpreters.
  9. Consideration of how this assistance will help build long-term evaluation capacity in your organization. CURA rarely supports multi-semester evaluation projects.
  10. A plan to communicate findings. You may want to consider disseminating results at conferences, presenting findings to stakeholders, writing reports or articles, and posting written materials on the web.
