“Paint the Ave.” Community Mural Project

The Native American Community Development Institute (NACDI) is an American Indian community development organization – the first of its kind − created by and for American Indians. NACDI is committed to transforming the American Indian community to effectively respond to 21st-century opportunities and challenges. NAWAYEE Center School was a founding member of the Minneapolis Foundation of Alternative schools in the early 1970s. It has a strong commitment to alternative education and serving American Indian youth, providing transformative education grounded in indigenous life-ways and love of learning. All My Relations Arts has a more than decade-long history of producing quality contemporary American Indian fine arts exhibits and public art initiatives. The “Paint the Ave.” project was a community mural collaboration focused on building capacity and expanding leadership skills in American Indian youth through artistic expression and a community organizing model. The project incorporated American Indian methods and values with mainstream community organizing and public art strategies. The most significant impact of the mural project on the neighborhood will be promoting youth empowerment, building geographic identity and strengthening cultural pride through artistic expression. It will also build youth leadership capacity and skills utilizing an American Indian community organizing and engagement framework.
